Abstract

Cardamom (Amomum aromaticum Roxb.) is one of the non - timber forest plant species in the medicinal/spice group with high economic value and is considered a crop for hunger eradication and poverty reduction in some mountainous regions of the North. Lai Chau has an area of over 6,000 hectares of Thao qua, making it the third - largest province in the country, after Lao Cai and Ha Giang. Research results show that the selected Thao qua forest areas for selecting superior trees are all over 13 years old, with good growth and development, meeting the criteria for selecting superior trees. These forest areas are planted in the districts of Tan Uyen, Tam Duong, Phong Tho and Muong Te. From 107 candidate superior trees, 38 superior trees were selected, with fruit yields ranging from 5.03 to 8.35 kg per tree, and fruit yield exceeding from 214,97 - 372,25%. The essential oil content in the fruit ranged from 2.07 to 3.83%, which exceeds the standard essential oil content specified in the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia (2017), with an exceeding rate from 47.86 to 175.71%.
