Results of selecting the elite trees of Dai jackfruit in some Northern provinces of Vietnam

Abstract

Dai jackfruit is a long-standing specialty jackfruit genetic source of the northern provinces of Vietnam with good fruit qualities, providing high economic efficiency to farmers. However, at present, the local jackfruit planting area is increasingly shrinking, and genetic resources are being eroded and even at risk of disappearing. Through the evaluation process, Ha Noi city and Phu Tho province are the two provinces with the most diversity of local jackfruit genetic resources in the Northern provinces, typical in the quality of the fruit, the productivity as well as the area of cultivation. For the purpose of conservation, exploitation and developing effectively the indigenous Dai jackfruit, it is necessary to research and select the elite trees, select high quality jackfruit trees to build a reputable source for the expansion of cultivation. As a result, 7 elite Dai jackfruit trees were selected in Thanh Ba district, Phu Tho province and 9 elite Dai jackfruit trees in Son Tay town, Hanoi city. All the elite trees are sown with seeds, they have healthy growth, reverse egg-shaped dark green leaves, sharp nose. Flowers begin blooming from November to May annually. Ripe jackfruit on July, August. Jackfruits have good quality, high nutritional content, sweet taste, soft, dry, fragrant scent, stable yields, dry matter content (⁰Brix) medium high above 23% and have been approved by the local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, putting them in the long-term conservation plan to exploit the effective Dai jackfruit genetic source.
